Self-Definition
Helevorn is a Doom/Death Metal band from Palma (Mallorca), founded in 2000. For 25 years, we have been exploring the darkest depths of metal, combining melancholy-laden atmospheres with an emotional intensity that resonates deep within. Our music re?ects on human fragility, tackling themes like lack of compassion, loss, and the way absences shape our existence, all wrapped in a sound that blends the melodic and the devastating.
We de?ne ourselves by our commitment to continuous evolution without abandoning our roots. Over the years, we have re?ned a style characterized by powerful guitar riffs, impactful guttural vocals, dark clean vocals that add contrast and depth, and keyboards that create dense, immersive atmospheres. Our goal has always been to craft a soundscape that resonates deeply with the listener, offering an experience that is both visceral and introspective.
From our beginnings to our latest works, such as Espectres (2024), we maintain a close connection between classic Doom/Death Metal and Gothic metal, a trait that gives us a distinctive character. Collaborations with renowned artists and meticulous production on each album have allowed us to remain relevant on the global metal scene without sacri?cing our authenticity or our Mediterranean roots.
Our music is not for those seeking to escape reality but for those daring enough to confront the rawest and deepest emotions. In every riff, in every word, Helevorn is an invitation to explore what it means to be human in its purest and most painful form.
We are a well-known band in the global underground scene with an extensive live track record. We have shared the stage with bands like Swallow The Sun, Moonspell, Katatonia, Draconian, Saturnus, Esoteric, and Rotting Christ, and have performed in many countries across Europe and in Canada.
Biography
The band was formed in 1999 to follow in the footsteps of bands like Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy, who were then rede?ning Gothic Metal by adding electronic elements. However, we wanted to keep the classic ’90s style, and in 2001, we released our ?rst demo, Prelude, as an introduction to the underground scene.
After our female vocalist left, we decided to continue with male vocals only, while maintaining the songs created up to that point. This led to our first album, Fragments (2005), which carried on with a Gothic style while incorporating some Doom/Death influences. This album marked the beginning of signi?cant recognition in Europe, including a track on a Katatonia compilation released by the German label Northern Silence. Known for its blend of melodic and guttural vocals alongside dark atmospheric instrumentation, it allowed us to tour with Swallow The Sun in Spain and Portugal. In 2006, we signed with the Spanish label Goi Music, which handled the album’s distribution.
After several years of silence and songwriting, we released Forthcoming Displeasures (2010), recorded in Mallorca with renowned international producer Jens Bogren and Johan Örnborg (Opeth, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Draconian). The band introduced a harder, darker, and heavier sound, moving more ?rmly into Doom/Death Metal and establishing itself in the international scene. The album was released by the respected Russian label Solitude Productions, highly regarded in the global underground.
This album gave us the opportunity to perform at festivals like Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany and Devilstone Open Air in Lithuania.
Seeking a strong musical step forward, the band took a year to write new material, resulting in Compassion Forlorn (2014), which re?ected a deep compositional maturity and explored themes of human decay and suffering. With this work, Helevorn established itself as a key reference in the genre in Europe, touring with iconic bands like Saturnus and Draconian.
In 2019, we released Aamamata, an album addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, blending our signature melodic doom with epic in?uences and incorporating purely Mediterranean instruments like the bouzouki and lute. This release led to our ?rst North American tour, performing from coast to coast in Canada, and appearing at major festivals in Romania (Metal Gates) and returning to Slovakia (Gothoom Open Air).
In 2020, the band faced challenging times, losing four out of six members, including two founding members. Between that year and 2022, four new, younger musicians with diverse in?uences joined, and the band concentrated on creating a new album. This record, Espectres, our ?fth studio album, was released in September 2024 and is considered one of our most personal and mature works.
The band is currently working on what will be its 25th-anniversary tour in 2025.
